If you happen to visit the learning center of JICT you will discover that life is not limited by economic or social strata. One sure thing you will discover there is the ‘never give up’ spirit to learn and create new things, -despite limitations. It sounds true that the sky is the limit.

Every day, the children at JICT Learning Center (Rumah Belajar) fill up their days with new creations, innovations and some more positive activities.

Cooperating with the Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), the center has conducted special training aimed at acquiring practical skills to run their own life once they have finished schooling time at the center.

Mustaqim Sirathal, JICT community development coordinator, described the trainings as 'life skill' as they can be applied in daily life.

It takes four months to accomplish this life skill education which is done every Friday, with two different training sessions, in the morning and afternoon.

Basically there are four basic and most practical life skill trainings, which are geared towards building up self esteem and creating of easily applied process once they are out of the school.

Those include the creation of decorative candles, plastic lampions, beads-made decorations and flannel-made hand phone encasement.

Previous sessions to design decorative candles and plastic lampions were conducted on 8 May, directly guided by seven volunteers of UNJ.

Sirathal who witnessed the how the sessions were managed explained that the students were very enthusiastic with the program, and most even asked for more time on their work, though the time was up.

"The most precious learning was the new knowledge about creating decorative candles and lampions from used plastic bottles. I think these materials can be obtained at low cost and suitable for them in case they want to run small business out there," explained Sirathal.

Other lessons learned that they are trained to make use of trashy materials and conjure them up into useful and moneymaking tools.

Beyond all these trainings there lies a grand mission to cultivate the spirit of independence, collectiveness, and cooperation among participants in solving a task.

The sessions for beads-made decorations and flannel-made hand phone cases were conducted on 15 May, guided by seven UNJ volunteers, both for the morning and afternoon classes.

The students were trained how to make use of beans, corn, and rice beads, which can be found anywhere in Indonesia.

Basically, these things are very easy to learn and very practically as they will not need much money to purchase those required materials.
